The Truth Behind Fear

Fear and anxiety are widespread phenomena in our society. Much of what we are afraid of makes little sense from a realistic perspective. And yet we continue to give our fears more and more space – instead of learning to deal with them consciously and constructively.

How does this happen?

What Is Fear?

There are forms of fear that are entirely appropriate. If I am crossing a road, it is wise to remain alert in order not to be hit by a vehicle. This type of fear sharpens our perception and protects us.

However, when fear becomes so overwhelming that I can hardly leave my home, it begins to restrict the radius of my life. My daily routine is no longer guided by freedom, but by avoidance.

The same applies to seemingly irrational fears – for example, fear of spiders or mice. A small house spider cannot harm us. Nor does a mouse pose any real threat. So what is really going on beneath the surface?

Recognising the Deeper Meaning Behind Fear

No fear arises without reason. Symbolically speaking, every fear points to an underlying issue that often operates beneath conscious awareness. In therapeutic work, this deeper theme needs to be explored individually and with care.

In my experience, a fear of spiders is frequently linked to experiences of feminine enmeshment – for example through mother figures or other significant female caregivers during childhood. As a result, one’s own feminine strength may not have been able to develop freely.

A similar dynamic can be observed in the fear of mice. This fear often appears in individuals who have – usually unconsciously – entered into emotional co-dependency, frequently rooted in unrecognised psychological burdens carried by their parents.

These connections are typically not consciously recognised by those affected.

The Good News

Behind every fear lies an unrecognised truth. And every truth that is brought into awareness begins to lose its power.

Our life themes manifest on different levels – sometimes through symptoms we can hardly interpret ourselves. For others, these patterns are often easier to recognise than they are for us.

The good news is this: it is possible to face these issues consciously – rather than allowing them to govern our lives indefinitely.

The Love Behind Fear

When we begin to recognise what in our life story was truly burdensome, we also come to understand this: that story belongs to us – but it no longer defines us.

The past loses its power once it has been acknowledged and integrated. We no longer need to project it into the present.

In this inner liberation, space begins to emerge. Space for vitality, for trust – and for love.

That is the aim of any good therapy.

In my sessions, people learn what this path can look like.

Warm regards,

Marc Altmann
